Tournament at MPC
Monterey Peninsula College is hosting a fundraiser tournament on April 5 and 6 at their stunning new pickleball courts. Proceeds from this event will support MPC scholarships and Athletics. While Monterey Bay Pickleball Club usually reserves its website for promoting club events, MPC has been a valuable supporter of our club in the past and will be hosting our upcoming spring social. This tournament presents a fantastic opportunity to express our gratitude by contributing to their programs.

Starting at $60, the tournament entry fees are quite affordable. Whether you're a first-time tournament player looking to jump into the action or a seasoned competitor eager for good matches without travel costs, this event promises fun for all skill levels. Plus, it's the perfect chance to experience the excellent facilities at MPC.

Carmel Pickleball Update
At its March 13, 2025 meeting, the city of Carmel's Forest and Beach Commission decided to impose stricter limits on pickleball at Forest Hill Park. They voted in favor of a staff recommendation to limit play to 10 am to 4 pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and to remove two of the pickleball courts entirely. Additionally, the commission is advocating for updates to the city code that would allow Carmel police to issue citations to individuals playing outside these designated hours.
This proposal will now move to the city council for final approval. The exact date of the council meeting has not yet been determined, but updates will be shared as soon as the information becomes available. The City Council meets the first Monday and Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. (with the exception of Holidays) in the Council Chamber of Carmel City Hall located on the east side of Monte Verde Street between Ocean and 7th Avenues.

In the meantime, here are the email addresses of the the council members in case you would like to express your concern over the Forest and Beach Commission recommendation.

New Club Logo and Merchandise
To bolster our club's identity, we have adopted a new logo and refreshed our website design. We are also commissioning merchandise featuring the logo. The first item is a stylish hat, perfect for playing on the courts.
We also have pickleball bag tags featuring the logo. The bag tags can be customized with your name and phone number. These are available for free exclusively to club members. To check your membership status, login and go to the My Subscriptions page in your profile.

Be sure to attend our next social event to see these new items in person. Pre-orders are available now.
New Courts Coming to Del Rey Oaks
As part of the Fort Ord Regional Trail and Greenway (FORTAG) project which began construction earlier this year, the City of Del Rey Oaks is striping the tennis courts at Work Memorial Park for pickleball. When completed, there will be either 2 or 4 courts shared with tennis. You can see a video rendering of the park enhancements here. The courts could open later this year.

New Courts Planned for Marina
The City of Marina is advancing a new indoor sports center and aquatic center project, with a budget exceeding $30 million. This sports center will feature 5 pickleball courts within a multi-purpose space shared with basketball, volleyball, and other sports. You can view a video presentation of the project and the City Council's discussion here.
As the most progressive pickleball city in the area, Marina also has several outdoor pickleball court projects in progress. These include 2 to 6 courts at Marina Dunes Park, 2 courts at Gloria Jean Tate Park, and 4 courts at Sea Haven Park. Unfortunately, construction has not yet begun on any of these projects.
Ryan Ranch Pickleball Funding Denied
Regrettably, the Monterey City Council has opted to abandon funding for this project, despite the NCIP (Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program) commission's recommendation of $300,000 over the past two years. The City Manager has been openly opposed to this project, and the Mayor seems to have aligned with his stance. The City Council discussion at their Nov 19th meeting was notably engaging, with the "old guard" advocating to return the project to the newly appointed NCIP commission members for their input, while the "new guard" aimed to terminate it immediately. A narrow 3-2 vote ultimately sealed the project's fate.

Future Plans for Monterey Pickleball
On the bright side, the City Manager and his team are not completely abandoning pickleball. They are backing changes to the Monterey Tennis Center (MTC) that would add six pickleball courts. However, the MTC is a pay-for-play facility, similar to others in the area like Meadowbrook, Hyatt, and Chamisal. Whether these changes will benefit the pickleball community will depend on the pricing structure.

The Santa Barbara Municipal pickleball center, for example, has $6 day use fees and annual memberships ranging from $125 to $153. If the MTC were to adopt a similar pricing structure, it could be quite successful. However, if it comes with monthly dues in the $50+/month range it will just be another entry in a crowded field.
Ryan Ranch Funds
In recent years, the Monterey Bay Pickleball Club has raised a total of $15,331, which the Club planned to donate to the city of Monterey for the construction of new courts at Ryan Ranch Park. This fundraising initiative began after members of the NCIP commission indicated a need for private funding. With the project's demise, the MBPC Board will now consider other ways to use these funds to support the local pickleball community, as outlined in our contingency plans.

Please reach out to the Board if you have suggestions on how these funds could be used to benefit pickleball in our area.
